Barbara E. Field Chamber Music Program
At Third Street, the Barbara E. Field Chamber Music Program provides an opportunity for students to be a part of this tradition of chamber music and grow as a musician and person. Chamber ensembles are made up of students of similar ages and skill levels.
Third Street’s three jazz ensembles provide the opportunity for students to develop their jazz improvisation and style. Each ensemble and small combo develop traditional and self-composed repertoire as well as personal improvisation and theory. Jazz ensembles have the opportunity to perform at concerts and special events around the community.
Third Street Music School Settlement is providing high-quality youth orchestra education in New York City. We have four orchestras which give students the opportunity to interact with each other and advance their music instruction as part of an ensemble. Orchestra playing is an essential part of a well-rounded music education and is recommended for all students, regardless of their skill level, experience or age.
Concert Bands
Third Street provides two concert bands for wind, brass, and percussion students. These ensembles perform traditional, contemporary, and popular repertoire in weekly group rehearsals. The New York City Symphonic Band at Third Street is comprised of woodwind, brass and percussion young musicians from across the tri-state area who aspire to perform advanced and professional-level wind band music.
Students interested in joining the New York City Symphonic Band must audition and display good technique and sight-reading skills.
Our Prelude Band for beginning level students provides a strong foundation for ensemble development and reinforces concepts and skills learned in individual lessons.
Rock out in groups from three to as many as seven students coached by Third Street faculty. Rock bands focus on group development, improvisation, and collaboration as groups rehearse self-composed or cover songs. Multiple bands mean students can find an appropriate skill level from intermediate to advance.
Performing in one of Third Street’s choirs is a great way for voice students to create music with their peers. Through this process, students elevate their performance skills in an environment that fosters teamwork, fun and music making. Choirs are separated by age, with Chorale being the most advanced ensemble for students whose voices have changed. Choirs perform at an annual spring recital, the school-wide Holiday Concert in December, and at small concerts throughout the school year.
