FAQs

Tuition & Registration Questions

How do I register for a class or lesson?

Register online or submit a signed registration form and pay the required deposit. Students can register in person, by postal mail or email. Paper registration forms are available at the school.

When should I register?

Individual and partner lessons are open for enrollment throughout the year.  Third Street recommends enrolling during the Early Registration Period, which begins on April 15 and continues until May 15. Returning students receive special consideration in scheduling if they register during this time. After the term has started, students must register at least one week before their intended start date. Group classes remain open until the enrollment maximum has been met or until the fourth week of classes.

Is there a registration fee?

Yes. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $60 per student for the September through June academic year.

What is the required registration deposit?

  • Individual / Partner Instruction: A deposit of $400, plus the $60 registration fee, is due at the time of enrollment. Families receiving need-based financial aid may arrange for a smaller deposit.
  • Group Instruction (Students under the age of 18): The required deposit for group instruction is 50% of the year’s tuition, plus the $60 registration fee.
  • Group Instruction (Students over the age of 18): The required deposit for adult group classes is the cost of the first session, plus the $60 registration fee.
  • Flex Pass (Students over the age of 18): Payment is due in full at the time of enrollment. Please note that students are responsible for keeping track of their lessons.
  • Preschool: Please call Student services.

Are there early registration discounts?

The registration fee is waived during the Early Registration Period (April 15 - May 15, 2019).

Do I receive a discount for siblings or other family members?

Family members receive a discount of $80 on individual lessons. Families enrolling siblings in the Third Street Preschool program will receive a 10% discount on the Preschool tuition of any additional sibling.

How do I pay for lessons or classes?

The School accepts tuition payments by cash, check, money order or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express). Payments can be made in person at the reception desk or by postal mail. Credit card payments for tuition may also be made by telephone.

What is the School's placement process?

INDIVIDUAL / PARTNER INSTRUCTION:

  • New students age six and under or all students with previous experience are invited to schedule a placement appointment with a Department Chairperson to discuss instructors and courses of study.
  • New students over the age of six and without previous experience are welcome to enroll without a placement appointment. Student Services will identify an appropriate instructor based on availability and area of interest.
  • Returning students should consult with their current instructor to set a lesson length and time for the new academic year.

GROUP INSTRUCTION:

  • Students interested in group instruction will be placed by Student Services or the department chairperson into the appropriate class according to age, availability and skill level.

How will I be notified of my/my child's start date?

Families will receive confirmation of their enrollment, with a schedule and calendar, by mail.

What if I have a conflict, how can I change my schedule?

INDIVIDUAL / PARTNER INSTRUCTION:

  • Before the term has started, please inform Student Services of any scheduling problems and they will attempt to accommodate your needs. After the term has started, families can confer with their individual lesson instructor. Some changes may require consultation with a department chairperson.

GROUP INSTRUCTION:

  • Most group classes will have both weekday and Saturday options, students may transfer to another appropriate section of a class, subject to availability.

How can I change instructors?

The School recognizes that there are many reasons for wanting to change instructors and respects and honors your wishes. Additionally, the School strives to make this process as seamless and stress free as possible. Contact Student Services to schedule an appointment to speak with your department chairperson about your desire to change instructors.

School Policies & General Information

Attendance & Make Ups

Regular attendance is important to music and/or dance learning at Third Street. As a courtesy to instructors, students are asked to call the School and leave a message for their instructor if they expect to be absent.

The School may discontinue enrollment for any student with three (3) consecutive absences, a pattern of absences or consistent tardiness, without notification.

Lessons missed due to teacher absence are rescheduled at the earliest date possible. If the instructor is not able to give the lesson missed by the end of the term, the School will issue a credit to a family’s account. Due to space and scheduling considerations, Third Street does not require instructors to make up lessons due to student absences or cancellations. There are no refunds for lessons or classes missed due to student absence; however, lessons missed by students may be made up at the instructor’s discretion.

Withdrawals & Refunds

INDIVIDUAL/PARTNER LESSONS

Withdrawals must be delivered to Student Services, in writing, by hand, postal mail or e-mail, two weeks prior to the effective date. Verbal notification or not attending a class is not an acceptable form of notification of intent to withdraw. A withdrawal fee, equal to two weeks of tuition plus $75, is assessed when a student withdraws from individual/partner lessons.

Refunds are issued for unused lessons beyond the withdrawal period; however, the registration fee is not refundable. Students may attend lessons during the two-week withdrawal period. If a partner withdraws from a lesson and is not immediately replaced, both the School and the family will have a period of 4 weeks to find a suitable partner for the remaining student. After this period, the student will be transitioned to individual lessons.

GROUP LESSONS

Withdrawals must be delivered to Student Services, in writing, by hand, postal mail or e-mail, two weeks prior to the effective date. Verbal notification or not attending a class is not an acceptable form of notification of intent to withdraw.

To receive a refund, students must withdraw from group instruction prior to the start of the third week of the class. A withdrawal fee, equal to two weeks of tuition, is assessed when a student withdraws from group instruction. To withdraw and receive a refund for the second half of the year, written notice to Student Services must be received by January 15 of the school year.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

Written notice of withdrawal must be received by May 1 of the school year. After this date, parents or guardians are responsible for the full year’s tuition. There are no refunds for the Preschool program after May 1. The deposit is not refundable or transferable.

SUMMER POLICIES

Tuition and registration fees for group and individual lessons are non-refundable and non-transferable, with two exception: 1) for individual lessons that an instructor is unable to give; and 2) for a class that is canceled due to insufficient enrollment.

Tuition and fees for all classes and lessons (except Third Street Summer Camp), must be paid in full at the time of registration. No student or family with an outstanding tuition balance is permitted to register until the balance has been paid.

Course Cancellation

While the cancellation of courses rarely happens, it does occur occasionally, usually due to insufficient enrollment. Students or parents of students will be notified immediately of any cancellation. The School will make every effort to reschedule the student for another session of the same course, if one is available, at a convenient time. If no such course is available, the School will issue a refund.

School Closings

In cases of inclement weather, Third Street closes when the New York City public schools close. Public school closings are broadcast on radio stations WINS (1010 AM) and WOR (710 AM). Third Street will also send an email notice and updates will be posted to the homepage of the School’s website. Students can also call the School’s main telephone number, 212-777-3240, to hear a recorded message regarding closings. Missed lessons will be rescheduled at the earliest date possible.

Instrument Rental

Third Street Music School provides rental of some woodwind, brass and string instruments to students, subject to availability. Students should consult with their instructor if they wish to rent an instrument. If an instrument is available from the School, Student Services will notify the student when it is ready to pick up. A refundable deposit, equal to the annual rental fee, is required. The School also partners with several retail establishments that provide rental instruments.

Practice Studio Availability

All music students are encouraged to practice every day. During times of decreased building use— Monday through Friday before 3:00 p.m. or after 7:00 p.m.—students may sign out a practice room at the Reception Desk.

Student Safety & Building Rules

Third Street seeks to be an oasis of arts learning for all who enter. While on the premises, adults are expected to model behavior that is conducive to learning and artistic exploration. Parents and/or caregivers are responsible for their children’s behavior and must supervise children when they are not inside a classroom or studio.
