Performance Opportunities

Public performances boost students’ confidence and encourage them to set and achieve artistic goals. With more than 250 recitals, concerts, and events by students, faculty, and guest artists each year, performance is an integral part of Third Street’s artistic life. Student performance opportunities include:

MUSIC HOURS
Music Hours are student recitals led by each Department Chairperson. Music Hours provide an opportunity for students to try out new pieces, polish old ones and prepare for upcoming recitals and concerts in a relaxed, informal, supportive and nurturing environment. Students are expected to attend Music Hours to perform, as well as learn how to become good audience members.

Music Hours take place on Saturday afternoons for both string and piano students; on Monday evenings for woodwind, brass and percussion students; and on Thursday evenings for the guitar department and voice department.

STUDIO RECITALS
Featuring all students who study with the same teacher, collectively called a studio.

DEPARTMENT RECITALS

Presented throughout the school year to showcase students who have made significant progress. Students are recommended to perform at a Department Recital by their instructor.

ENSEMBLE CONCERTS
Each year, a variety of ensembles, large and small, as well as students studying dance, have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience.

ANNUAL CONCERTS
Including the winter Holiday Extravaganza, which showcases a wide variety of student performances; the Nutcracker, where our talented dancers take the stage; and the Stowe C. Phelps Annual Concert featuring some of Third Street’s high-achieving students.

SUMMER CONCERTS
Students enrolled in Third Street’s summer workshops perform for family and friends at the culmination of their programs.

SPECIAL CONCERTS & EVENTS
Select ensembles and soloists have performed at the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, The Greene Space, Symphony Space, Times Square, NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, Winter Garden in Brookfield Place, and at other local events. They also have been featured on WNYC, WQXR, and WNBC and other media.
